Citing Wal-Mart's refusal to offer domestic partner benefits to its gay and lesbian workers, the HRC said Tuesday that the USA's biggest private employer has "more work to do in furthering equality." It advised gays and their supporters to shop elsewhere.
Wal-Mart has cheap goods (or bads), but the true price America has paid for their crap won't be found on a tag. The Big Box store has essentially wiped out charming downtowns, undercutting mom and pop stores who can't compete. Thus, instead of shopping on lovely Main Street's, we spend our time in ignoble warehouses.
Some would argue, that this is the free market of supply and demand - and that a warehouse is necessary to cut costs. Well, under this logic let's just do away with the walls of Wal-Mart and we can all shop in Flea Markets, as having no bricks and mortar (or aluminum siding) will lower prices even further.
If we want to forget quality of life issues - we can all shop with standards that mimic the developing world - but we will one day wake up and realize that America is an uninspiring third-tier nation. Our parents shopped in beautiful towns, while we push carts in dimly-lit, hulking facades that resemble airplane hangars. Are we better off than the last generation - or do we simply have moderately cheaper underwear to show for our loss of the American Dream?
Finally, in mom and pop shops, people were in control of their own destiny. Now, they have to wear ridiculous-looking blue aprons and become company drones to succeed. Is this the dreary vision of America that we want to pass on to our children? No wonder so many people are taking anti-depressants!
